September2015
- Trunk updates:
a) Updates since last meeting: none
b) Updates in progress
i) SLI and POP #18, #61 - meeting between JS/VH/LN/RL identified that need CASA-CNP case in test suite. VH and LN continuing to consolidate and commit changes specifically around ensuring CASA-CNP works as expected with POP turned on, isolating CASA-CNP changes that only relate to POP, checking on driver upgrades e.g. ability to run for specified dates rather than those in input file. VH and LN to finalise changes in next few days and pass to JS to action. JS to liaise with BP around an additional test suite case with CASA-CNP included.
c) Update still to come #62, #66, #68, #70 - waiting on JS/RL to check whether need switches No progress
Additional trunk issue: JK queried process for incorporating alternate stomatal conductance into trunk (currently based on tagged version). JS happy to handle merge. JK will update ticket #56 and document new veg_params file which is required. JS to run test-suite with switch off as check. JS to decide on whether stomatal conductance or SLI/POP goes into trunk first, and will deal with any consequences.
- CABLE-JULES coupling
a) Progress with coupling into UM8.5 for ACCESS-CM2. (explicit/implicit discussions resolved) Seem to run without crashing now. Still some concerns about simulation e.g. screen-level temperature. Problems most obvious in NH winter so maybe snow related.
b) CABLE in JULES4.2/UM10.1
Being progressed at CSIRO end now, in parallel with UM8.5 work.
c) Offline CABLE via JULES - happy with single site case. Need for detailed analysis of GSWP2 case?
-
CABLE science video conference - feedback? No feedback. Technical issues mostly overcome.
-
CABLE wiki pages change since last meeting
a) Progress on Beginners guide to CABLE development, BeginnersGuide - any response to CABLE news message? No response to CABLE news. Need to approach individuals. JK and MdK can add things learnt from doing the stomatal conductance work. JK to approach Mark D about anything learnt from the hydrology coding. Aspendale will also check where they can contribute.
- Benchmarking/test suite
a) CABLE technical test suite – other test users?, document on wiki? CASA-CNP test? Cumulative fluxes (ET, GPP) will be added to the test suite when the SLI/POP branch goes into the trunk as a better test for model differences than sumbal which should sum to zero anyway.
b) PALS Progressing. Likely more stable than would have been without change in staff.
- Technical support
a) Possible role for Ned Ned interested in taking 6 months off PhD to implement a better CABLE management system and testing facility, so that any code changes can be more rapidly assessed from a science as well as technical perspective. One application would be in determining best defaults for code switches. Committee generally supportive of the idea. Need follow-up conversations to refine ideas. Also need to consider how anything we propose fits in with anything already existing or in progress at the Met Office.
- Upcoming meetings
a) CAWCR workshop (October, Melbourne) RL to contact Ruth L to confirm program and determine feasibility of CABLE get together.
b) Greenhouse2015 (October, Hobart) VH and Tilo Z known to be attending.
c) LandMIP meeting (October, Zurich) GA and Ruth L attending.
d) OzeWex (December, Gold Coast) GA coordinating a session on Water Cycle processes in CABLE. Abstracts welcome (aim to be discussion promoting). GA will also look to target possible speakers.
e) AMOS (special session, land/CABLE, February, Melbourne) Promote abstracts for special session through CABLE list etc.

Next meeting date: Thursday 8 October, 2pm Confirmed as OK with everyone.
