Usage

Upgrading

The Stone Sonic factory default image is always available for download via Bittorrent.

There are periodic new releases to the factory default image when there have been significant changes in the underlying software (new versions, bug fixs, etc). When a new factory default image is available, it will replace the existing torrent.

Users may download the factory default image and use it to upgrade their existing Stone Sonic at any time.

Be aware that you will lose any ISO images or customizations you may have made. An upgrade will return the drive to its factory default condition.

Repairing a Bricked Drive

The factory default Stone Sonic image may be downloaded at any time. Unless it has hardware failures, it should be possible to flash a bricked drive to its original condition.

Download

The factory default image for the Stone Sonic is 128GB. Because of this, it is only available via Bittorrent.

The recommended Bittorrent client is uTorrent. It's lightweight, easy to use, and versions exist for all operating systems.

You must have a Bittorrent Client installed to perform this download. It's 128GB, making Bittorrent the only feasible option.

To learn more about Bittorrent, see the Bittorrent Site.

Bittorrent Etiquette

It's typically considered good etiquette to seed any downloaded file until it has reached twice its download size. This keeps the torrent's swarm healthy and makes downloads much faster for all users.

Please set your Bittorrent Client to seed until it has reached 2.0.

Flashing the Image

Notes

  • This will return the Stone Sonic to a factory default state.
  • You will lose any ISO images you may have copied to your Stone Sonic, as well as any customizations.
  • This procedure is the same whether you are upgrading or repairing a bricked drive.

Windows

TBD

Linux/UNIX/OSX

The procedure in any UNIX-like operating system is simple. It relies on a mature, well-tested program that comes with every UNIX-like operating system: dd

To flash the image, perform the following steps:

  1. Open a terminal window.

  2. In the window, type the following command:

sudo dd if=[path-to-image]/[name-of-image].iso of=[usb-device]

You will be asked for your password to allow access to this command.

You will need to:

  • Replace [path-to-image] with the appropriate path to the downloaded the image.
  • Replace [name-of-image] with the name of the image that was downloaded.
  • Replace [usb-device] with the device name of your Stone Sonic drive (typically in the format /dev/XXX).

This will flash the new image, at which point it will be ready to use.
