A WiredTiger test framework to run 24/7 workloads

Installing testy

Running testy requires two machines: a local machine from which to run the fab commands and a remote machine where the testy framework lives. Your local machine should be your Mac laptop and not an evergreen workstation. We have not yet tested running Fabric on Windows.

On your local machine, install the python packages needed to run Fabric commands:

python3 -m pip install fabric invocations

Install testy on a new AWS EC2 instance

Launch an EC2 instance and install testy using the fab launch command:

fab launch --distro=<distro> [--wiredtiger-branch=<wiredtiger_branch>] [--testy-branch=<testy_branch>]

Install testy on an existing machine

The install function allows you to install testy on an existing machine (such as an Evergreen host or workstation) running one of our supported distributions:

fab -H user@host install [--wiredtiger-branch=<wiredtiger_branch>] [--testy-branch=<testy_branch>]

If not specified, the WiredTiger branch defaults to develop and the testy branch to main.

Running testy

You can upload a workload or use an existing workload in the testy framework. If the workload requires the database to be populated before starting, do this first. If either process fails, an error message is returned.

fab populate

The populate function takes a required workload argument. This function executes on the the populate() function as defined in the workload interface file to populate the database required for the workload.

fab -H user@host populate <workload>

fab start

The start function takes a required workload argument. The function executes the run() function as defined in the workload interface file, and also starts the backup and crash testing services. Running the workload, database backups and crash testing are managed on the remote server by linux systemd services.

fab -H user@host start <workload>

If a workload is already running, the start function does not work. Either call restart or stop.

fab restart

The restart function takes an optional workload argument to restart the framework on. If no argument is given, the current workload is used for the new run. The restart function can also run validate() as implemented by the user's workload interface file, this optional argument must be passed in for validate to run. If this is not successful, an error message is returned and restart is aborted.

fab -H user@host restart [workload] [--validate-workload] 

fab stop

The stop function does not take any arguments and stops the running workload, backup service, and crash testing service.

fab -H user@host stop

fab update

The update function allows you update the wiredtiger and/or testy source on the remote host. This function can take two optional arguments, a WiredTiger branch and/or a testy branch and updates the current branch to these supplied branches. The update function stops the current workload, updates the branches and starts the workload again in its function. If no arguments are provided, nothing is done.

fab -H user@host update [--wiredtiger-branch=branch] [--testy-branch=branch]

fab workload

The workload function has three options: upload, upload config and describe. If no option is given it returns the current workload. Up to three options can be given at a time in any order but they are be executed in the order of (1) upload , (2) describe and (3) upload-config. If one option fails, an error message is printed and the other options continue to execute.

  • The workload --upload requires one argument, the compressed workload folder. The function uploads a workload from your local machine to the remote testy server. You need an archive containing a workload directory with a workload interface file my-workload.sh, and any other files needed to run the workload. The workload directory and workload interface file are required to share the same name to operate. Testy can extract most compressed file types. This extracts the files in the framework's 'workloads' directory, inside a folder named after the workload. The function prints an error message on failure, and delete any traces of the failed upload from the remote server. To overwrite a workload, simply upload a workload with the same name and you will prompted if you wish to go ahead.

  • The workload --upload-config requires one argument, a test format config file. The function uploads a config file from your local machine to the remote testy server. This places the config file directly into the test format workload directory ready to run test format.

    fab -H user@host workload --upload-config=<CONFIG.sample>
    
  • The workload --describe function takes an optional workload name as an argument and describes the given workload. If no argument is given, the current workload is used. If there is no current workload, an error message is printed. This description is implemented by the user in the workload's workload interface file {workload}.sh. If not implemented, the function prints a default message.

    fab -H user@host workload --describe=[workload]

fab list

The list function has four options: distros, instances, snapshot and workloads. Up to three options can be given at a time in any order. If one option fails, an error message is printed and the other options continue to execute. Note that the operations interacting with AWS directly and not the remote machine do not require a '-H user@host' argument.

  • The list --distros command lists the available distros where a testy server can be installed through the fab launch command.

  • The list --instances command lists the available instances we have already launched.

    fab list --instances
    
  • The list --snapshots command lists the available snapshots that can be used through the fab launch-snapshot command.

    fab list --snapshots
    
  • The fab list --workloads command lists the available workloads on the testy server, highlighting the current workload.

    fab -H user@hostname list --workloads
    

fab info

The info function allows you to see information relating to the testy service. This function prints the current wiredtiger and testy branch and commit hash, the current workload, and the testy service status. This function takes no arguments.

fab -H user@host info

fab snapshot-delete

The snapshot-delete function takes a specified snapshot ID or a list of snapshot IDs separated by a comma with no spaces, and delete the corresponding snapshots.

fab snapshot-delete=<snapshot_id,snapshot_id1> 

fab snapshot-failures

The snapshot-failures function has 5 optional parameters: list, get, dest, show and delete. Any number of options can be given at one time, however it is best to use them one at a time to avoid any mistakes in dealing with the files.

  • The snapshot-failures --list command lists the snapshot verify failure files on the remote machine and can be downloaded through the --get option.

  • The snapshot-failures --get [--dest] command downloads the specified failure file from the remote machine locally. You can optionally specify a destination through --dest to download the file to a specific location and optionally rename the file. By default it downloads to the current working directory with the original file name.

    fab -H user@host snapshot-failures --get=<snapshot.txt> [--dest=/path/to/file]
    
  • The snapshot-failures --show command prints the specified failure file in the terminal.

    fab -H user@host snapshot-failures --show=<snapshot.txt> 
    
  • The snapshot-failures --delete command deletes the specified failure file from the remote machine.

    fab -H user@host snapshot-failures --delete=<snapshot.txt>
    

Adding functions to fabfile.py

We use Fabric -- a high-level Python library designed to execute shell commands remotely over SSH -- to manage our remote testy server. The testy commands are defined as fabric task functions in the file fabfile.py. We illustrate creating a new testy function in the example below.

To add new functionality in fabfile.py follow the structure:

In the terminal we can call this new function describe like so:

Fabric tasks require a context object as the first argument followed by zero or more user-defined arguments. The context object (passed in as c in the example above) is used to share parser and configuration state with executed tasks and provides functions to execute commands on the remote server, such as c.run(). You can add additional arguments that give the user ability to pass arguments into these fabric functions.

Fabric allows you to execute shell commands both on the remote server and locally. More information on fabric commands can be found here.
