title: "About NMFS Openscapes"
---

NMFS Openscapes is a multi-year collaboration between NOAA Fisheries science centers and [Openscapes](https://www.openscapes.org/) to provide team-based training in reproducible scientific workflows and platforms. We have had six Openscapes Champions Cohorts in 2020-2022 and have an upcoming agency-wide training with four Cohorts across multiple centers and regional offices in fall of 2022. Read [blog posts](https://www.openscapes.org/tags/noaa-fisheries/) about past NMFS Cohorts and other NMFS Openscapes activities.

In March and April we continued learning, developing, and investing in Openscapes, in many concrete ways, and with a lot of “firsts”. We just wrapped up our first 2-month version of the Champions Program with the [NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC)](https://www.openscapes.org/blog/2021/05/03/noaa-nwfsc-champions/). In addition, as we think about Openscapes growing, we kicked off training our first [NASA Champions Mentor Cohort](https://nasa-openscapes.github.io) with seven teams, which is so exciting and still ongoing. We also ran our first open call for a Champions Cohort funded by [Code for Science and Society (CS&S)](https://eventfund.codeforscience.org/) and we were so excited by the response and the eight environmental science teams that we are going to work with over the next two months. This is one of two cohorts we will run in May and June; the second is supported by [CSU COAST](https://www2.calstate.edu/impact-of-the-csu/research/coast) for marine scientists in the California State Universities. More details on these Cohorts below.

As part of the CS&S funding, which explicitly supports events that promote inclusion and broaden participation in open data science that drives scholarship, we partnered with [Tara Robertson](https://tararobertson.ca/), a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant we knew through Mozilla, as a thought partner and teacher for us as we continue to prioritize and improve approaches to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in Openscapes. We’ve discussed universal design concepts, power structures and data feminism, and much more. In another first, Tara created a new lesson on psychological safety for the Openscapes [lesson series](https://openscapes.github.io/series/index.html#remote-2-month) and delivered it for our [NOAA NWFSC Champions Cohort](https://www.openscapes.org/blog/2021/05/03/noaa-nwfsc-champions/). **Our May 25th Community Call will be a Chat with Tara Robertson** to reflect on what we’ve done together and our lessons learned. This will be an event using Spatial Chat (as we recently experienced with Ciera Martinez at the Berkeley Institute for Data Science [BIDS](https://bids.berkeley.edu/)!) and we invite you all to come and join us. More details will be upcoming here: [openscapes.org/events](https://openscapes.github.io/events/).

Finally, we are practicing what we teach and had our own first Openscapes‘ 'Seaside Chat’ as a way to organize our planning with GitHub like we do with code. We'll be updating our own Pathway document like we do with the Cohorts for where we are with Openscapes and how we continue to move forward.

**The Marine Mammal Stock Assessments Team** aims to streamline the development, review, and publication of the annual Alaska marine mammal stock assessment reports. This team includes Nancy Young (\@nancycyoung), Brian Fadely (\@BFadely), Rod Towell (\@rtowell), Tony Orr (\@Tony-Orr), and Erin Richmond (\@erinrichmond). Through Openscapes, the team used GitHub, a new [GitHub organization](https://github.com/NMML), wikis, and R Markdown to establish processes for preparing data and analyses, tackle outdated version control workflows, and improve on and offboarding procedures. The team focused on developing one SAR in R Markdown as a proof of concept. The team found that seaside chats spurred open discussion and idea sharing and plan to keep meeting after Openscapes.

**The Groundfish Food Habits Team** is focused on streamlining reproducible flow of code and data to provide food habits and model data to ESRs, ESPs, and stock assessments. This team includes Kerim Aydin (\@kaydin-NOAA), Kirstin Holsman, Bridget Ferriss (\@BridgetFerriss), Geoff Lang (\@geofflang-NOAA), and Jonathan Reum. The team found that writing out the pathways document helped confirm next overarching steps for the group, that there were changes that needed to happen in their workflow, and that they needed to establish best practices. In an effort to foster a culture of reuse, the team started and tested out a [GitHub organization](https://github.com/NOAA-REEM/REEM_foodhabits) and other avenues for collaboration so they can find the best platform forward for their unique team's needs.

**The Shellfish Assessment Program Team** is focused on 1) improving annual Tech Memo and 2) improving collaboration on bitter crab disease reports. This team included Mike Litzow (\@mikelitzow), Jonathan Richar (\@JonRichar-NOAA), Erin Fedewa (\@Erin-Fedewa-NOAA), Leah Zacher (\@LeahZacher-NOAA), and Jen Gardner (\@JenniferGardner-NOAA). Through the Openscapes program, the team devised a plan for accessing raw data, to data wrangling, to preparing tech memo figures. With their new [GitHub organization](https://github.com/AFSC-Shellfish-Assessment-Program), they had the tools to start earnest discussions on how to document their work.
