Register a Researcher Account

Register for an account at https://webcdi.stanford.edu/registration/register/

Fill in your full name, email address, and institution. Your registration will be reviewed and approved within a few days. Upon approval, you will receive an email with an activation link. Clicking this will activate your account and allow you to set a password. After this you will be able to create studies and collect data immediately!

Logging In

Go to the home page and click on Researcher Login. Fill in your login credentials and you'll be taken to the Reseacher Interface screen.

You will be able to see 2 sections: a User section and a Study section. The Study section has a drop down list which contains all your active studies. It will be empty if this is the first time you've logged in.

Create New Study

Select New Study and a Add New Study modal will pop up with the following fields:

  • Study Name (required): a name for you to identify the study
  • Instrument (required): a drop down list of the different Instruments you have access to for your Studies
  • Demographic: a drop down list of the Demographic forms available for this instrument. Some forms will split demographic data before and after the data gathering
  • Age Ranger for Study (in months): this will auto-populate on selection of the Instrument to default age ranges, but you can then adjust it through use of the slider. Children with age ranges outside the limits set here will not be able to progress past the background information pages of the administration
  • #Days Before Expiration: defaults to 14. This is the number of days a participant has to complete the form
  • Measurement units for birthweight (required): We can capture birthweight in lbs or kgs (the default is lbs). If you are using the split background information forms, you must set this to the measurement unit specified within the form. If you are using the default background information form, you can use either.
  • Minimum time (minutes) a parent must take to complete the study (default=6) (required): Self explanatory
  • Waiver of Documentation text (no titles): If this field has contents, a Waiver form will appear when the participant first enters the background information pages. They must confirm they are happy with the Waiver documentation to continue.
  • Pre-fill data for longitudinal participants?: This is a drop down list which allows you to select how much data is prefilled on longitudinal studies.
  • Would you like to pay subjects in the form of Amazon gist cards? (You will need to upload gift card codes under "Update Study"): Self explanatory. It should be noted, if you run out of gift codes then participant can still complete the form and will continue through the study and be able to complete it - they will not receive a gift card code. It is therefore important to limit the number of participants in these studies to the number of gift card codes you have available. This is done in the next checkbox.
  • Do you plan on collection only anonymous data in this study? (eg posting ads on social media, mass emails, etc): if you tick this box, two new fields will appear.
  • Maximum number of participants: set this to the maximum number of participants you require
  • At the end of the form, would you like parents to confirm the age of their child and that they completed the entire test? (Best for anonymous data collections where you haven't personally vetted each participant): self explanatory, however a new option has also been added. Further down the form you will see "Would you like participants to answer the confirmation questions (only available when split background information forms are used)". For split background Instruments this can be used instead.
  • Would you like to show participants graphs of their data after completion?: If ticked, a graphs are shown on completion of the administration showing how many words were understood/produced in the various categories.
  • Would you like participants to be able to share their Web-CDI results via Facebook? : Self explanatory
  • Would you like participants to answer the confirmation questions (only available when split background information forms are used) : This is only available on split background forms and the mother_yob_confirmation and appropriate weight confirmation field must be included in the front page of the form. See Confirmation Questions for more details.
  • Provide redirect button at completion of study? : If selected, a redirect button will appear on the completion page of the administration allowing the participant to be redirected to a url of you choice. You must complete this url in the field that will open beneath this field, "Please enter URL".
  • Please enter URL : Field containing the redirect URL to be used on completion of the administration. It must be a complete URL, eg https://www.example.com
  • Capture the Prolific Id for the participant? : If selected background information will have a field for the participants Prolific Id. Furthermore, the Add Participant modal will include a link you can put in Prolific to automatically load your study with their Prolific Id. When selecting this field, you should also select the "Provide redirect button at completion of the study" and enter the Prolific redirect URL with completion code so the participant can claim their reward.
  • Allow participant to print their responses at end of Study?: If selected the participant will have a button at the end of the study which will create a PDF of all their responses which they can download (if they choose to)

Study Panel

Once you have either selected a Study from the drop down or created a New Study, 4 button will appear in the Study Section, namely Add Participant, Download Data, Update Study and Delete Study. You will also see a new section, Data, which we cover later.

Add Participant

Clicking on the Add Participant button will pop up the Administer new subjects modal. There are 4 sections (5 is Prolific is selected in the New Study or Update Study sections). These are:

  • New Subject Ids : Here you can add a list of subject ids and when pressing submit, administrations for these subject ids will be created. You will see these new administrations in the Data section on the Researcher Interface. You will be able to send the link for these administrations to specific participants by clicking the 'link' field in the administrations row and send the participant the url which is opened.
  • Number of IDd to Autogenerate : self explanatory. You can again send specific urls to participants as described above
  • **Uploads a CSV of Subject IDs :"" self explanatory, but ensure you select whether or not there is a header row.
  • Single Reusable Link: If you send this link to participants, once they have completed the first page of background information, a new administration will automatically be created. You can send the same link to as many participants as you want and a new administration will be created for each.
  • Prolific Link: If you are using Prolific to source participants, this field provides a link for you to copy into your Prolific.co account for participants to click. It will automatically capture their Prolific ID.

Download Data

The download data button provides a dropdown with 4 options:

  • Download Data (CSV format): This will download all administrations in the study (at least 1 must be complete) providing both the background information provided, all individual answers and the category and benchmark scoring as described in Scoring & Benchmarking.
  • Download Data (CSV format): This will download all administrations in the study (at least 1 must be complete) providing both the background information provided and the category and benchmark scoring as described in Scoring & Benchmarking.
  • Download Data (CDI scoring format): This button will create and download a zip file which will include a single file for each administration. Each file will include the raw data for the administration
  • Download Dictionary (CSV format): Downloads the data used to administer the Study administration

Update Study

If you select the Update Study button you will get the Update Study modal pop up. This is exactly the same as the New Study modal except it includes two additional fields, namely:

  • Gift Card Codes: This is a list of comma separated Amazon gift card codes. These codes take the format XXXX-XXXXXX-XXXX so if you wish to test, enter codes in this format.
  • Amount per Card (in USD): This is the amount per card that should be allocated as a gift to participants.

Delete Study

Allows you to delete the study. A pop up modal requesting confirmation will pop up. Clicking ok will delete the Study AND ALL Administrations. Only do this is you're really certain it is what you want!

Data Panel

The Data section contains 3 buttons (Re-administer Participants, Download Selected Data and Delete Selected Data) and a table of the administrations created.

Re-administer Participant

If you tick the checkboxes against a participant and the select the Re-administer Participants, and new Administration will be created with the same Subject Id and Local Lab Id as the selected participant, and with the Administration number incremented by 1. Clicking the link field for this new Administration and sending it to the participant will allow them to complete the administration. Background and previous response data will be prepopulated depending on the settings within the Update Study modal, field "Pre-fill data for longitudinal participants?*".

You can tick many administrations on a page prior to clicking the Re-administer Participant button and it will create a new administration for each. Administrations on different pages will require loading the new page prior to clicking the button. For example, if you tick 2 rows on the first page, move to the second page and tick 3 then select the Re-administer Participants button, it will only create new administrations for the 3 rows ticked on the second page.

Download Selected Data

This works exactly the same way as Download, applying to only those items ticked. They must be on a single page.

Delete Selected Data

This will delete the administrations ticked. A modal will pop up asking you to confirm. Once confirmed the data is deleted. Please be certain you want to delete the data before progressing.

Table of Administrations

The table shows key information about the administration. There are the following columns:

  • checkbox: The checkbox is used in association with the buttons within the Data Panel.
  • Subject id: This is an unique identifier for the participant within the study. It can be automatically generated (which you can later modify) or specified through one of the fields in Add Participant. If you click on the link a modal will open allowing you to change the subject id. It will change for all administrations of the participant. It must be unique in the study.
  • Local lab id: this field in normally blank but provided to allow local ids to be added as convenient
  • Administration number: for longitudinal studies specifies the order of the completed administrations for each participant.
  • Link: provides a link to the administration. This will go to the final page if the administration is complete, the expiration page if the Expiration date has passed or the current position in the administration if it is part completed.
  • Completed: specifies whether or not the full administration has been completed
  • Completed Background Info (P1): specifies if the front page background information has been completed. P1 is specified because with some instruments there is a Page 2 provide upon completion of the administration.
  • Completed Survey: Note: this will only show if the Background Information is captured over split forms - for more information see Bespoke Background Information. This field tells you if all the assessment questions have been answered. If this is ticked but the Completed column is not ticked then the participant did not complete the final Background Information page.
  • Expiration date: date and time when the administration must be completed
  • Last modified: date and time of last update to the administration
  • Creation date: date and time the administration was created
  • Participant opted out of broader sharing: defaults to None (unknown). The researcher can edit this field by clicking on it. A new window will open and you will be able to select from the options Unknown, Yes, No. If Yes is selected the participants data will not be shared with other Researchers.
