I'm about to add more (and more complicated) implementations per object. Having everything in one module was already a bit overwhelming, and this would only have gotten worse.
This makes it possible to remove the associated type.

This is an assortment of cleanups that came out of my work on #1079. This doesn't change any behavior yet, but paves the way for making the fixes that #1079 requires.
