Dot repetition for presets

Dot repetition for format functions with presets didn't work.

I think it was a bug, though I didn't take a thought about it

Does someone use the dot_repeat = false flag?

I mean, it's kind of expected to enable dot-repetition by default. I'm not sure if it's needed, but I wouldn't insist on removing it

These are nice improvements, but I think you should mark mode_to_use and preset_to_use as private fields (with __ at the start) since this is not a public API.
