Open Life Science Project (OLS)

This repo contains all the drafts, links used to develop Open Life Science Community in Saudi Arabia. OLS3 is 16-week mentoring & training program, based on the Mozilla Open Leader program, helping participants in becoming Open Science ambassadors.

Our vision statement:

We want to provide a place in Saudi Arabia where newcomers and experienced peers interact, inspire each other to embed open science (research) practices and values in their workflows and provide feedback on policies, infrastructures and support services. Together working to make Open Science the norm. So we are calling out to researchers and colleagues in Saudi Arabia

News - Week3

  • Legal Team to register the community.
  • Mentioned our community in the WiDs Workshop "Collaborating on Open Data Science Projects", which was well-received. It's available online.

  • Both the talk and the workshop were linked to the Turing Way in Zenodo and were added to their newsletterle this month.
  • I met Puala and she was interested to take part in the community.
  • I have a meeting scheduled with Ba Essa (KAUST) next week.

  • Contacted International Network of Open Science & Scholarship Communities (INOSC), maybe will join their network. I'm still waiting for their reply

  • I'll also give a workshop with R4E on 17th of March
  • I asked some saudi magazine if I can write articles about open science and our community

News - Week 7

  • OLS3 cohort call was amazing, with guest speakers Renato Alves, Helena Rasche, Esther Plomp and André Maia Chagas on Agile Project Management, Open Source Software, Open Data and Open Hardware
  • I met with Leok, he was interested in applying OS in the Middle East.
  • He suggsuted I join the steering committee
  • We finalised the logo of our community
  • Submitted an abstract for an incubator in useR conference about expanding the R community and OS in MENA.
  • Repro4Everyone submitted a agrant (included my name) to translate materials to different langaugse including Arabic.
  • Our first Carpentries Middle East local meeting on the 5th of April - I will discuss open science community in Saudi Arabia.
  • I met few volunteers in MozFest and spoke about my project, hope to give a talk next year.
  • I attended "building a research software communities: How to increase engagament in your community", the notes here and here. I might write blog post later about it later on.
  • I'm giving a lightning talk at Collaborations Workshop 2021 in SSI (CW21) titled "Peer code review of computational methods in academic journals" next week- I'll add links to our community.
  • General Authority for Statistics
  • A demo for general template for the website for OSCSA
  • Funding from Code for Science and Society, how much am I suppose to apply for (e.g. $5-10K)?

News - Week 9

  • Happy Easter 🥚🐇🐾 🐇🐰🥚!
  • Enjoyed the "dissemination" session - AutSpaces project.
  • Carpentries local community call - Open Science enthusiasts.
  • I submitted the grant.
  • I attended interesting workshop about "Building Research Software Communities: How to increase engagement in your community".
  • I found an Arabic Trnslations (Resources) about Open Science funded by the European Commission under the ERASMUS + European programme.
  • I was contacted by Daniel Nüst from CODECHECKER.
  • I hired an artist to draw illustrations about the Open Science in the global South but wasn't good.
  • Trying to make a proposal for General Authority for Statistics - examples?
  • Can we divide the next meeting?
  • Change the description of the project in OLS3 webiste
  • The theory of change, map, proposals, website!
