NATS Over SCiON

NATS Over SCiON Logo

This is a fork of NATS-Server which adds support for native communication over the SCiON Internet Architecture

Why

A message bus is a foundational component within many distributed applications. Due to their criticality, any downtime experienced across the bus can effect crucial business functions. Can we leverage SCiON to ensure that we have the most available and optimal network paths for messages to traverse?

Objective

Port an existing open source message bus over to SCiON to explore the benefits of Path-aware Networking (PAN) using SCiON.

Candidate Identification

There are many message bus projects to choose from but in order to narrow the plethora of options we devised the following criteria for identifying the appropriate project:

  • Golang - Core SCiON Libraries are written in Golang
  • Currentness - How much development has happened in the last 6 months?
  • Age - How long has the project existed?
  • Dependencies - How many dependencies did it take to run the project?
  • Development Maturity - Are their standards that are applied to all contributions? Vibrate community?

NATS fit the bill well. Its written in Golang, has several contributions daily across numerous committers and has been around since 2011.

Status

We were able to successfully port NATS over to SCiON for its server and client components. Enabling Path-aware Networking traversal for NATS server clustering and NATS client -> server communications. NATS servers and clients over SCiON can recover from routing outages instantaneously and ensure the highest level of uptime of vital business applications.

This is the first message bus that were aware to natively run across SCiON. Our hope is that this provides a strong foundation for new applications to be built over the SCiON network.

The source and build instructions for each of these ports can be found:

Build

Nix

Easiest way to building this project:

$ nix develop
$ go-build

Generic

Requirements: Go 1.19

Building nats:

$ go build -ldflags "-w" -o ./nats

Cluster Setup

This will setup a two node NATS Cluster over SCiON. This assumes that a SCiON network setup(SCiONlab or otherwise) and NATS built.

Create the 1st server config, AS 18-ffaa:1:10bf:

$ cat << EOF > server1.conf
server_name=s1
listen=4222
debug=false

scion {
  path_preference="bandwidth,latency"
}

cluster {
  name: c1
  listen: "nats://18-ffaa:1:10bf,127.0.0.1:4248"
}

Replace AS address for server 1

Creating the 2nd server config, AS: 18-ffaa:1:10a:

$ cat << EOF > server2.conf
server_name=s2
listen=5222
debug=true

scion {
  path_preference="bandwidth,latency"
}

cluster {
  name: c1
  listen: "nats://18-ffaa:1:10a0,127.0.0.1:5248"

  routes  = [
    "nats-route://[18-ffaa:1:10bf,127.0.0.1]:4248"
  ]
}
EOF

Replace AS addresses for server 1 and server 2

Run server 1 serivce:

$ ./nats -c server1.conf

Run server 2 service:

$ ./nats -c server2.conf

You should see something along the lines for startup:
