Ethics Research Assistant

The Alan Turing Institute – Apr 2020-Dec 2021

  • Participated in workshops on the ethics of digital twins, hosted by Sopra Steria in collaboration with the Centre for Digital Built Britain, providing feedback on the Gemini Principles – Sopra Steria this report
  • Provided an in-depth analysis of the ICO's draft AI and Data Protection Risk Toolkit with Dr. Adrian Weller in response to their consultation
  • Supported the Public Policy programme in creating training materials for civil servants to engage with the guidance Understanding artificial intelligence ethics and safety (Leslie, 2019)
  • Designed a new research ethics committee process alongside the General Counsel, as well as a new questionnaire for researchers drawing on Leslie (ibid.) and The Turing Way (The Turing Way Community 2019)
  • Formed part of the “enrichment student” recruitment panel in 2020
  • Developed research ethics training sessions that I delivered to principle investigators and early career researchers through the Data Study Groups programme
  • Worked closely with the principal investigators of many cutting-edge data science projects to ensure they were conducted thoughtfully and responsibly; amongst others, there were various AI for Science and Government workpackages, the inception of the online harms observatory, the trustworthy identity systems project, and the NHSx COVID app,

Change Maker: Why are so few Disabled Students Studying At LSE?

LSE – January to July 2020

  • Designed research framework together with two fellow students to investigate LSE’s below-average attendance from disabled students
  • Worked closely with Admissions, Wipdening Participation, and Disability & Wellbeing departments to ensure our analyses were useful to them.
  • Conducted statistical analysis of admissions data for the previous eight years using Excel, as well as a benchmarking exercise versus other Russell Group universities.
  • Surveyed 150 disabled students to gather insight into their shared experiences as LSE alumni.
  • Advised on helpful policies, including a proposal for improved feedback collection, and the establishment of a Disabled Student Council; our recommendations were picked by LSE’s disability service starting 2020/21 and considered in LSE’s data strategy.

Workshop on Data Hazards

Jean Golding Institute – September 2021

  • Facilitated a workshop on "Data Hazard labels" along with the project's co-PIs, Dr. Natalie Thurlby and Nina Di Cara (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.5513976)
  • Familiarised myself with the co-PIs' prompts and the labels themselves
  • Gathered further feedback from the Turing's Ethics Advisory Grou to support the refinement of the drafted labels

Workshops on Supporting AI Research Ethics Committees

Ada Lovelace Institute – May 2021

  • Part of a joint effort between the Ada Lovelace Institute, the University of Exeter and the Alan Turing Institute, gathering ideas from both academia and industry to understand the challenges research ethics committees face in data science, and provide recommendations.
  • Developed a dummy research project to provide an example research ethics application.
  • Assisted in the design of the two workshops, ensuring that sufficient attention was placed on both the philosophical underpinnings and the operational aspects of research ethics committees.
  • Facilitated breakout discussions.

Postgraduate Philosophy Conference

LSE – September 2020

  • Co-organised a two-day postgraduate conference with the support of the LSE's Department of Philosophy, Logic & Scientific Method
  • Invited keynote speakers Dr. Cailin O’Conor (University of California, Irvine) and Dr. Chris Burr (The Alan Turing Institute)
