To fit the 4-5 week development timeline, our team decided to develop an online game of Yahtzee. It is a familiar game with an established rule set and object parameters. We will work to codify it in the context of a server that controls dice values, rule sets, and scoring, a game-hosting client, and game-joining clients. We felt this design would help us to provide clear examples of some of the concepts developed during the course.
Installing and running the yahtzee application locally requires some terminal use to get started.
In order to run the yahtzee application locally, you must have Docker and Docker-Compose installed on your local machine. Once you have Docker and a local copy of the repository installed, open a terminal window within the "project" folder, and then run the following command:
docker-compose build
After this command completes, then in the same terminal run the following command:
docker-compose up
After the project builds and is deployed locally, you should see text in the terminal window that says "Starting development server at http://0.0.0.0:8000/". Once that appears, navigate to "http://localhost:8000" in your browser of choice to see the app running locally on your machine. You may need to add localhost to allowed_host in settings.py.
Because unauthenticated users can only access the index page, the first thing you'll want to do is register an account. The registration process runs string input validation and also checks your password strength, so use a reasonably secure password or it will error out.
Once you have registered, you will be able to host public games as well as join games in progress. If other people have access to your deployment, they will be able to join your hosted game and vice versa.
Once you have hosted or joined a game, the game page runs basically like yahtzee, but players are able to play asynchronously, so you won't have to wait on other players turns. You will see what round they are on and their current score as well as your own!
