app specific passwords don't work

When I generate an app specific password, the resulting login dialog refuses to accept it, says the password is wrong. I'm not sure why. All I get in console when entering the app specific password is:

login: did-finish-load https://accounts.google.com/signin/challenge/sl/password

Does hangupsjs need to use a particular authentication API to support app specific passwords? I'd rather do that than have yakyak show up in my account's connected devices as an iOS device. Since I have no iOS devices this was both confusing and suspicious.
