Yes at the moment fq requires to be able to seek and know the size of the input file. This reason is a mix keeping things simpler, fq is already quite complex as it is :) and also make it simpler to write format decoders. Some other reasons are to support formats that keep metadata at the end of a file and also the functionality to automatically add "gap" fields. But there might be ways to have partially on-the-fly and streaming decoding. For example one way to support some steaming format could be to allow decoders to be generators that could output zero, one or more "decode values", and possible on-the-fly decoding could be done in a more controlled way if the format decoder knows the size or range of a format. What kind of formats are thinking of decoding where streaming would be useful? network protocols or media formats?

Yes that would be useful addition, see #627 for a discussion about it.
Could you give some examples how such integration would look like? fq decoding directly from a network interface or be able to interact with other tools somehow?
fq is more or less mostly developed by me with addition of format decoders added by other people. All your ideas are interesting and things I would like to explore. Are experienced writing go code or/and developing similar software and could help out? Happy holidays! |

I trust this message finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to propose an enhancement to the fq tool, which I have found to be an invaluable asset in working with binary data formats.
Having utilised fq extensively for parsing and inspecting binary files, I have observed an opportunity to augment its functionality to better support real-time stream processing. This would be particularly beneficial for scenarios where binary data is not static but continuously generated, such as in network packet analysis or live media streaming.
The current functionality of fq is well-suited for static files, yet extending its capabilities to handle streams could open new avenues for its application. Real-time analysis of binary data streams would enable users to perform on-the-fly decoding and manipulation of data as it is being transmitted or received.
To achieve this, I suggest the following enhancements:
Stream Buffering: Implement a mechanism to buffer incoming data streams, allowing fq to process data incrementally as it becomes available.
Windowed Processing: Introduce windowed processing features to enable operations on chunks of the stream within specified time or size bounds.
Asynchronous Processing: Adopt an asynchronous processing model to handle concurrent data streams without blocking I/O operations, thereby improving throughput and responsiveness.
Plugin Architecture for Custom Protocols: Develop a plugin system that allows users to define custom protocols and processing logic for proprietary or less common binary formats.
Integration with Network Tools: Provide integration capabilities with existing network tools to facilitate the capture and analysis of network traffic in real-time.
I believe these enhancements would significantly bolster the utility of fq, making it a more versatile tool for a wider range of applications. Moreover, it would align with the project's goal of making binary data more accessible and manipulable.
I am keen to hear your thoughts on this proposal and would be delighted to contribute to the development of these features. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated, and I am ready to collaborate closely with the fq community to bring this vision to fruition.
