This is usefull if you intend to link your synapse homeserver to a smtp server to let synapse be able to send email when you have new unread notifications.
Some work is already here:
main...grvn-ht:rocketchat2matrix:add-email-to-synapse-account
Don't mind what is in handlers/message.ts and helpers/synapse.ts (attachement stuff)
