Rectangular selection

Rectangular selection would make it easier to select a group of elements. When Shift is held, a click+drag should always trigger the rectangular selection (overriding the dragging behavior).

Doesn't shift+drag restrict to movement on a single axis in some apps? Or is that alt? Now I don't remember...

Snapping to axis is Control in Inkscape, but in any case it's different whether you press Shift while dragging, or hold Shift while you click. In the first case it could modify the dragging behavior, but in the second case it can modify the type of action the click performs.
