Drive-Thru: chef-solo in minutes

Drive-Thru aims to be a quick and easy way to go from a box with only an ssh connection to a box that contains everything that you’ve ordered off the menu (as defined by your cookbooks and dna.rb)

Getting started

You’ll need to enter your password once to setup the public key. After that take a 5 minute break while drive-thru handles your order.

  1. ‘git clone git://github.com/mikehale/drive-thru.git`

  2. ‘cd drive-thru`

  3. ‘git submodule init && git submodule update`

  4. Edit config/rake.rb with your server specific information

  5. ‘rake initialize_host` # (adds your public key to root user, configures DNS, installs chef-solo, rsyncs your cookbooks and runs chef-solo)

Workflow

  • add recipes and update dna.rb

  • run rake

  • rinse and repeat

Note: drive-thru has only been tested on slicehost using the ubuntu jaunty image.

Apache + Passenger Example

This example will install apache and passenger on your box, and configure apache for your application(s). You’ll still need to cap deploy your rails app(s). Check out github.com/ezmobius/chef-deploy for how to deploy your application using chef.

Update your dna.rb

dna = {
  :apps_dir => "/var/www/apps",
  :applications => [
    {
      :name => "example",
      :server_name => "example.com",
      :server_aliases => ["www.example.com"],
    }
  ],
  :recipes => [
    "apache2", "apache2::mod_rails",
    "passenger",
    "applications"
   ]
}

Add an applications cookbook to site-cookbooks

rake COOKBOOK=applications, optional CB_PREFIX=site-

Edit site-cookbooks/applications/recipes/default.rb

apache_site "000-default" do
  enable false
end

directory(node[:apps_dir])

node[:applications].each do |config|
  name = config[:name]
  config[:env] ||= "production"
  config[:server_name] ||= node[:fqdn]
  config[:server_aliases] ||= []
  config[:port] ||= 80
  ssl = true if config[:port].to_s != "80"
  protocol = ssl ? "https" : "http"
  name_env = "#{name}_#{config[:env]}"
  app_dir = "#{node[:apps_dir]}/#{name_env}"

  web_app name_env do
    docroot "#{app_dir}/current/public"
    template "rails.vhost.erb"
    server_name config[:server_name]
    server_aliases config[:server_aliases]
    rails_env config[:env]
    port config[:port] || "80"
    ssl ssl
    protocol protocol
  end
end
