I don't know if other developers like these tools, but I do use them:

incron: in some interoperable event, I need to detect when a file is found in a certain directory (is placed)... using incron can request a php script to be executed when a file is detected.
cron: for automated work some event, notification or mail.
cli: every cron must start with a php script in cli.
