There are no words on the buttons. I can make this work but I'm checking out shortcuts and can't see what to do.
Also there is no app indicator. I really want this to work

for the app indicator to work, you need to enable the "Run in Background" setting in the app, and your system needs to support indicators, for gnome specifically you need an extension for this : you can an install "Extension Manager" and from there install "AppIndicator support"

Back to the original problem, its weird, the app is not doing anything special its a Gtk4 app, does other Gtk4 app work normally ? maybe run journalctl -f before running it to see if there are some logs about it

For the appindicator get it works:

  1. Install https://mattjakeman.com/apps/extension-manager
  2. Enable "AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support" extension
  3. Open Stimulator go to settings, change behavior on exit to "Run in Background"
  4. Toggle on "Disable Automatic Suspending" in stimulator then close it, it should now continue to work in the background with a tray icon indicator

Yes this was discussed before and the tldr is the tray icon is just an extra feature that we don't want to add much to it, #86 (comment)

I prefer keeping the current system , unless :

  • more users demand this
  • someone create a pr that makes this behavior configurable , in clean way without affecting the original design in anyway

@geoiii68, I think this extension might be a better solution for you in this case: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/517/caffeine/

Caffeine is broken

In this case, unfortunately I can't recommend anything more.

The tray icon for Stimulator will remain a secondary addition and will probably never be a primary function. This is because the application is primarily intended for use on the GNOME desktop, where the tray icon is not supported by default.

My solution is to pin stimulator to dash

I use this solution and I think it's very good and simple.

I don't know if it's possible at the moment, but I had the idea that the dash icon could also be dynamic and show the status of the application (light bulb off or on).
