Support for handles?

For some of the output we produce, handles are used instead of DOIs. An example is the PhD Thesis of Stijn:

https://hdl.handle.net/11245.1/a3fdc6aa-7e1d-4035-b402-44c154e0dbf2

It would be great if we could support handles for importing metadata, but I'm not sure the infrastructure behind it is sufficient for that?

Which seems to be the reference paper for this software:

I don't think there is an API available from which we can query the metadata, see e.g. the documentation here. The best we can get is https://hdl.handle.net/api/handles/11245.1/a3fdc6aa-7e1d-4035-b402-44c154e0dbf2, which doesn't have nearly enough metadata available.
