Wireless xbox 360 controllers won't connect to adaptor (18.04)

Hi,

I'm having no luck getting wireless 360 controllers to connect to the attached adaptor. This is on a fresh install of Xubuntu 18.04.1
I do have xboxdrv working on other systems with the same controllers / adaptor (One is 16.04 and other is 18.04 updated from 17.10).

Sorry if this is a duplicate of Issue53 but I tried disabling mimicking xpad with no luck so not sure if it's a different problem.

lsusb correctly identifies:
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 045e:0719 Microsoft Corp. Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter

and 4 /dev/input/js devices show up as expected but controllers simply will not connect to the adaptor on this system.

Let me know if any other diagnostics would be helpful (omitted most of what I've looked at so as to not write a whole wall of text!)
