Quick heads-up: we're updating this for php8.1 and will contribute our changes in a PR shortly.

I expect we'll want to do the PR as a new minor. Do we need to start with a 1.1.x branch for that?

Since no release was tagged, I'd say that 1.0.x is good enough.
