Active tile hint cuts right through programs after changing workspace #1665

(1) Issue/Bug Description:

The active tile hint (in tiling mode) will sometimes cut right through a tile after switching workspaces - but the only programs I see this with are JetBrains IDEs?

(2) Steps to reproduce (if you know):

There is any number of ways to trigger this, but the easiest setup is:

  • Workspace 1: Any two programs
  • Workspace 2: One JetBrains IDE*
  • Focus on either program in WS1
  • Switch workspace to WS2 with Ctrl+Super+Arrow down
  • The active tile hint does not conform to the IDE, but instead remains in the shape it had on WS1

If the two programs on WS1 are equally sized and in two columns, the tile hint cuts directly down through the IDE. If WS1 is divided off-center so one program has more space than the other, the tile hint cutting through the IDE is also off-center. If the programs are vertically split, the line through the IDE is also vertical in the same position.

*I have confirmed just now with Rider and CLion, and I am almost certain I remember it happening with GoLand but I don't have that installed at the moment.

(3) Expected behavior:

Active Tile Hint treats JetBrains IDEs the same as they do all other programs.

(4) Distribution (run cat /etc/os-release):

I have seen this behavior on several different machines (two thinkpads and a galago pro) all year, but right now I am on:

NAME="Pop!_OS"
VERSION="22.04 LTS"
ID=pop
ID_LIKE="ubuntu debian"
PRETTY_NAME="Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS"

PRIVACY_POLICY_URL="https://system76.com/privacy"
VERSION_CODENAME=jammy
UBUNTU_CODENAME=jammy
LOGO=distributor-logo-pop-os

(5) Gnome Shell version:

42.9

This behavior has been seen since February of 2023 so it might have occurred with older versions, I haven't kept track.

(6) Pop Shell version (run apt policy pop-shell or provide the latest commit if building locally):

pop-shell:
  Installed: 1.1.0~1682616779~22.04~b5accce
  Candidate: 1.1.0~1682616779~22.04~b5accce
  Version table:
 *** 1.1.0~1682616779~22.04~b5accce 1001
       1001 http://apt.pop-os.org/release jammy/main amd64 Packages
       1001 http://apt.pop-os.org/release jammy/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

(7) Where was Pop Shell installed from:

Gagalo pro came with Pop!_OS from the factory, both thinkpads were installed off ISO's from system76.com at different times (februrary 2023 and september 2023) and the galago was re-installed with an ISO off system76.com ca. August 2023.

(8) Monitor Setup (2 x 1080p, 4K, Primary(Horizontal), Secondary(Vertical), etc):

Behavior has been reproduced on

  • 1980p galago
  • 1920x1200 thinkpad,
  • 1366 x 768 thinkpad
  • 3440x1440p ultrawide
  • Same brand different model 3440x1440p ultrawide.

(9) Other Installed/Enabled Extensions:

I think gnome-tweaks has been installed on all of them.

(10) Other Notes:

I was having the same problem. I installed this extension and it fixed this specific problem. I haven't really tested in a multi-monitor setup.

I'm running Pop Shell in Fedora 39. I tested with GoLand 2023.3.1.
