Windows support for magic is poor. imghdr is built into python and works well across platforms, especially for handling path with Unicode characters. I got magic to run on Windows, only to find out that it cannot open paths with Japanese.

I think that imghdr is a bit limited when it comes to recognized file formats.

But much easier to set up on Windows (and slightly easier on other platforms). It can at least be a fallback option.
