Update on this - I think I did find and easier solution which is for me to actually build my app inside the payload admin using custom views which gives me direct access to the payload config, and I can store any metadata on the fields that I want to access in the config. Love how extensible everything is! |

Hi team, I am wondering if it's possible to access field metadata via the API? I'm interested in using payloadCMS to build data management interfaces/dashboards for a research institution and having the ability to get the field type along with the api response for a collection would help out a lot. My current workaround has been to create a "data dictionary" collection with "collection" and "field" fields that I query on to access additional field metadata, however with a lot of fields this becomes becomes a little tedious and adds room for error as I have to update this collection manually when I add additional fields or collections.
Please let me know if I'm missing some easier approach, but if not I would like to suggest adding the ability to store field metadata as a payload managed table similar to the already existent "payload_preferences" table. This approach would allow accessing not only the field type, but also the options on a select field, max/min values, if the field should be treated as readonly, or any of the other field options that are used internally in the admin interface.
