Project Pythia connection

Related to #11 and #33...

Now that Project Pythia is underway, we are starting to develop a list of "foundational material" for learning in the geosciences. One of the topics that we've noted is Jupyter, and we had a discussion about it in our most recent weekly meeting.

Some questions for the Jupyter community:

• How do people feel about the Project Pythia team linking to the best "How to use Jupyter Notebooks" content on the Project Pythia portal? If so, what would those links be? (For the bravest soles, a PR to https://github.com/ProjectPythia/projectpythia.github.io would be very appreciated!)

• Also, are there thoughts on whether teaching Jupyter Notebook Server (old Jupyter Notebooks) vs JupyterLab is better or more appropriate for different audiences? Or is JupyterLab "the future"?

I should also ask if the Jupyter Meets the Earth folks feel like there are any "gaps" in the Jupyter onboarding content that still need to be filled (and if Pythia can help with that)?

Just a quick thought on the UI point - you may wanna keep an eye on https://github.com/jtpio/jupyterlab-classic - it is a re-implementation of the classic notebook interface, using JupyterLab components 👍

@choldgraf: Who would the target audience be for jupyterlab-classic? Do certain people prefer the classic notebook interface over JLab? Who?

Hi @kmpaul, for the research purposes that use remote sensing data, yes, JupyterLab is more like "the future" since I have heard multiple people who used Matlab a lot begin to transfer to JLab thanks to its faster browser-based interface. I less certain about this when it comes to teaching purposes, though.

Hi, just following up on conversations with @fperez at yesterday's Pangeo Showcase and with @kmpaul at today's Pythia working group meeting. It's not yet clear to me how best to coordinate efforts between Jupyter Meets the Earth and Project Pythia on this learning material, but I'd be glad to be part of the conversation.
