This research is exciting. I do hope there are plans to merge betrfs into the mainline kernel and provide a fuse-betrfs module to make it more accessible via package managers in the different distros.
BTW have you considered any interoperability or use-case scenarios where orangefs uses betrfs as its underlying layer?

We have longer-term aspiration to upstream this code, but it will take significant work to get it in compliance with kernel coding standards. Our near-term goal is to get the code working on more recent kernels, and, as a result, easier to packager and install (e.g., with DKMS and a debian package). The code is primarily in-kernel, so we probably would not need fuse.
We have not looked at orangefs yet, but are open to exploring new use cases. If you have a workload you care about accelerating on orangefs+betrfs, we would love to hear more about it.
