Programmatically Adding to 'Select Options'

Is there any API to programmatically add the list of options for a given 'Select Options'?

We are looking to add a new 'selection option' to the list whenever a certain Object class is created.

In general, for short lists of items, our users find the Select component easier to use than the Many-to-one related field component so we are looking to populate the 'Select Options' from the data Object.
