Free subdomain cannot verify #47024

Good evening, Github requires domain verification because it does not want you to be able to access domains that don't belong to you. That's why they make you create a socalled CNAME record on your domain/subdomain, which then gets checked so they know that this is really your domain. Unfortunately how to add this CNAME record really depends on your hoster/registrar/free subdomain provider. You will have to provide further details where you have got this subdomain from or look for guides on creating this record yourself. You could also take a look at FreeNOM, as they provide free domains for 1 year. Make sure to set this reply as the answer if this helped you. Take care. |

Thank you for your reply. As you probably know there are many free
subdomains on offer in GitHub and you are told to fork their repository and
write a valid json file to add your specific subdomain name and wait for it
to be reviewed then added. However, beyond this I was just told to remember
to add it to settings. GitHub settings then pages where you add a custom
domain wants an apex domain because if I try and add a subdomain the system
throws out the name with an alert to verify. I am asking the community
because I can’t get a reply from the domain provider about how to verify
because I’d imagine they think I should have this basic knowledge which I
would if it was just a matter of adding example.com by going into a
providers settings for dns. What am I missing? Please excuse my ignorance.

….perhaps I should have added cname and txt to the json file ? The txt file
“challenge” one given by GitHub with verification code. (?)

"domain": "is-not-a.dev",
"subdomain": "yourname",
"owner": {

It is still not working for me and just showing an insecure site page
warning

I've resubmitted the json by adding "repo": "

reviewer. Not feeling very hopeful though because it just keeps resolving
to insecure site when I try the dev sub. If it doesn't work at least I have
the github short url.
You will need to wait till the PR is merged, please have some patience.

Your domain is working, i have checked using a NS lookup Just make sure you wait until the DNS verficiation is completed, if not, it will not work. Just stay a little in the tab until the DNS check in progress fades and turns green. And it will work. |

So I did another subdomain on here successfully and even though it used a different method of getting the information needed to merge I know now I needed to point the subdomain to my repository folder which needed to be just one word or name and not including the github.io so mynamegithub.io/myrepo as opposed to mynamegithub.io/myrepo.github.io and no TXT records because not replacing a registered domain outside of github. In any case , I will now for this site just use myname.github.io |
