Struggling to install kicad: “No space left on device" but I have over 100 GB free

Description of issue

I had ~60 GB and tried to update kicad from 8.0.1 to 8.0.3. It failed partway through a slew of ditto commands, saying “no space left on device.” That seems unlikely with 60+ GB free, but I went and quit some apps and purged some big files, and now I'm up to 112+ GB free. I completely removed kicad with rm -rf /opt/homebrew/Caskroom/kicad, since brew remove complained:

% brew remove kicad

Error: It seems there is already a Generic Artifact at '/opt/homebrew/Caskroom/kicad/8.0.1/demos'.

Now when I try (with 112 GB free), it is more succinct in its failure:

I wish it was explicit about which device it means. There are a couple dozen mount points on macOS, and I have no idea if extra ones are created during a cask install.

As the error says, Homebrew tried to create the /opt/homebrew/Caskroom/kicad directory and failed with "out of space".

I wish it was explicit about which device it means.

df -k /opt/homebrew/Caskroom would tell you.

With 60 GB free? I doubt it. I cleaned up more stuff and had 120 GB free and it still failed. I ended up making it work, but I can't remember how.

Do follow up if you remember what you did to make it work, because if you're saying that the partition containing /opt/homebrew/Caskroom had over 60GB free when the error occurred, and it was confirmed with df -k, that points to a Homebrew bug that (presumably) no one's seen before.
