I used mappings to have mount points in the server to be visible to web clients. For example I have /mnt/fileserver/ visible as http://myoss/docs/.
The big problem here is that if you change something in the paths you have to reindex all the docs, and this may take weeks... This is because I understand OSS persists the mapped path in the db. Often you do not have the complete design of your data dirs in mind when you start using OSS.
It would be useful to apply the mapping at the last stage in the web interface, while generating results html, so that if I change the mappings configuration it is reflected on the fly without reindexing.
