Having the possibility to interact with other Instances timelines seamlessly has been requested many times for the mastadon web interface (mastodon/mastodon#6942, mastodon/mastodon#1053, mastodon/mastodon#1189 and so on). So far issues have always been closed. There are some tools like Mastovue and Mastoview and tootle for ios succesfully implemented such a feature. Without an Iphone it is pretty hard to easily interact with other timelines though and finding someone outside of your local timeline can be hard on the messy federated timeline. Implementing such a feature would really make pinafore standout.

I still support this feature request, but at least Mastovue exists and is usable on both desktop and mobile, thank you for sharing that.
I was minutes away from writing the same app myself. 😅

Actually, it looks like Mastodon v4 includes this feature.
Look : https://pewtix.com/public/local
I didn't see this documented anywhere. 🤔

Barring instance configuration otherwise, it's always been possible to view posts on another instance (previously at /explore I think), but when you do, you're not doing so from the perspective of your own instance, so the favorite/boost/bookmark functions won't work. They just take you to the "Paste this link into your own instance!" modal.

By my understanding, this issue is to permit browsing other instances' timelines but still be able to interact with the posts as from your own account.

(I would also love to have this.)

Only mixed with other instances' posts, while the new feature allows you to see posts only from the instance you're visiting.

but when you do, you're not doing so from the perspective of your own instance

I forgot to mention it, but I made a userscript : MastoVue embedded.

It embeds MastoVue into your Mastodon instance as an iframe, and when clicking a post or a profile, it copies the URL so you can (have to, unfortunately) paste it into the search input if you wanna interact.

I also intend to make a second one that directly embeds the /public/local route of any instance instead of MastoVue, but I still will only be able to automate copying but not pasting profile/post URLs.

Side note : Mastodon's Content-Security-Policy is a pain in the ass for userscripts development, I struggled to inject CSS, and I'm struggling again to inject a Vue app.

Confirmed that this works on Android using Fedilab with the Manage timelines feature.
