How do you insert a table into a paragraph in an existing document?

I have an existing document that I want to insert a table into, but doc.InsertTable(pos, table) does not work, it simply appends to the end of the file. Looking at the doc body elements you can see it's in the correct position but nevertheless, it does not appear that you can insert a table into a word document in a specific paragraph or at a particular location. Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong or if this is a limitation, and if I should instead create placeholder tables at the correct position.
