Discussed in #93

In addition to gaining official support from R-focused organizations (#63), funds could be allocated towards ensuring rworkflows is maintained and further improved in the coming years as the user base grows.
@NathanSkene here's several ideas I can think of, but feel free to suggest other mechanisms.

GitHub Sponsors

GitHub Sponsors allows the developer community to financially support the people and organizations who design, build, and maintain the open source projects they depend on, directly on GitHub.
GitHub Sponsors does not charge any fees for sponsorships from personal accounts, so 100% of these sponsorships go to the sponsored developer or organization. GitHub Sponsors charges a fee of up to 6% for sponsorships from organization accounts.

Buy Me a Coffee

Buy Me a Coffee makes supporting fun and easy. In just a couple of taps, your fans can make the payment (buy you a coffee) and leave a message. They don’t even have to create an account!

UK Reproducibility Network

Open and Responsible Researcher Reward and Recognition (OR4) Project

The main focus of the project is on procedures for the recruitment and promotion of researchers, but procedures related to the following are also within scope: probation, annual performance assessment, the award of institutional funding to support research, and other forms of reward such as prizes. The primary intended beneficiaries are members of UK research-performing institutions who are involved in the implementation of research assessment reforms

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative

Essential Open Source Software for Science (Cycle 6)

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), The Kavli Foundation, and The Wellcome Trust invite letters of intent in support of open source software projects essential for biomedical research. The goal of the program is to support software maintenance, growth, development, and community engagement for these critical tools.

We just missed the Letter of Intent deadline (Oct 17th), but something to keep an eye on CZI's EOSS program in the future.

Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

Better Software for Science grants

Software is increasingly central to scientific research, but academia often fails to leverage best practices for software engineering from industry or elsewhere. To realize the full potential of software in advancing discovery—whether in data science, computational modeling, or machine learning—this program aims to adapt and extend approaches from other contexts into academic software development while recognizing the unique workflows and incentives of the research enterprise. Rather than funding individual scientific software development projects, grants in this area focus mainly on tooling, institutions, economic models, and incentives around the production, maintenance, and adoption of research software.
Interested grantseekers should send a two-page letter of inquiry to [email protected].

Better Scientific Software (BSSw)

BSSw provides a central hub for the community to address pressing challenges in software productivity, quality, and sustainability.

Funding sources and programs

BSSw Fellowship Program

The Better Scientific Software (BSSw) Fellowship Program gives recognition and funding to leaders and advocates of high-quality scientific software.
Applicants must be affiliated with a U.S.-based institution that is able to receive Federal funding. Typically such institutions include U.S. government labs, U.S. universities, and U.S.-based corporations.

Digital Science

Working in partnership with the academic community, we create pioneering technology to inform your strategic direction and make open, collaborative and inclusive research possible.

Perhaps they would be willing to collaborate or provide support for rworkflows as it seems to align pretty well with their objectives.

NumFOCUS

Not just for python, rOpenSci is associated with them too! Besides, rworkflows now supports conda environments.

They also receive Corporate Sponsorship, another avenue we could consider.
