Is this just for admins to login? or is there something end users can do if they login to the site?

For now it's just for admins, so it's just a good to have.

For users I think it's discouraging to create an account to join an event.

What? Persona is NOT discontinued and it's (and will) the main auth protocol for all mozilla sites.

But is not mandatory to have a persona account to register in an event, right??

No, we just use log-in for people who creates events, users don't register any account, just fill a form, no registration involved.
