The ISSS website has some information on this topic of the NHI+SHIA combination. But here is some more practical info.
This government site states that D-2 visa holders can apply immediately if they prove a period of stay greater that 90 days. Degree-seaking students can also cover the remaining 30% with the KAIST SHIA insurance to achive 100% coverage on campus.
Most probably not! Most exchange students will have their own private insurance from their home country. You only need to signup for NHI if you are here for longer (at least one year). You can also choose to sign up voluntarily, but the advantages are small.
- Bring these documents: ARC, passport (with last entry stamp to Korea)
- Go to the Mannyeon branch of NHIC: 대전광역시 서구 만년동 348 (Map)
- Enter the building, go to the right, get a waiting number and go to a counter.
- Ask to register for NHI. (In Korean: 건강보험 신청하려고 해요.)
- They will copy your personal information into the computer and ask you to pay for the first month. It's something around 49,000 Won. Easiest to pay in cash.
- If you have a Korean bank account, you can setup auto payments for the future. Just let them know your bank account number and sign some form.
- Done!
