App crash from IllegalArgumentException: 'item' is a list

We're using 0.16 in our android app and have seen crashes resulting from the following stack trace. We haven't been able to reproduce it internally. We've traced where it was being thrown in this project but didn't understand how it would occur. Does anyone have any insight on what would cause this?

The log does not seem to show line numbers with real library code.
It probably needs to be de-obfuscated first.

Yeah, they are not correct. I grepped through where the calls were made to see if there were any obvious issues, then saw the error was thrown explicitly here:

I should be able to get the real line numbers

We don't preserve the original line numbers with proguard - this trace is the best we have for now.
