3. EEPROM

Trying to build a 6502 based computer.

We need a memory to store a program that executes on reset. This program could be, for example, a basic interpreter, a monitor or some OS shell. I don't know yet how to fill a RAM (connected to the 6502) with an external tool. So we go for a ROM, actually a programmable ROM, a PROM. We make mistakes so let it be an erasable PROM, an EPROM, and in this age that will be an electrically erasable PROM, an EEPROM.

So, we will attach an EEPROM to our 6502, so that the 6502 has code to execute upon reset. We get another problem: how do we program that EEPROM. With an EEPROM programmer.

I found the AT28C16, a 2kB EEPROM. I also found a Youtube video by Ben Eater that explained how to make a programmer for it using a Nano. That seemed like a good way to go.

We will do the following experiments

3.1. EEPROM programmer

3.1.1. Design of the EEPROM programmer

Programming the AT28C16 is fairly simple. In steady state, the chip is powered (VCC, VSS) and enabled (nCE). To write a byte, set an address on its 11 address lines, data on its 8 data lines, and pulse nWE low. To read a byte from the memory chip, set an address on its 11 address lines, pull nOE low, read data from the 8 data lines, and release nOE to high.

We can write Nano firmware to do that. One complication is that we need 8 data wires, 2 control wires (nWE, nOE) and 11 address wires. The Nano does not have that. So we follow Ben's approach and use a shift register for the address wires. We do not use the shift registers for the data wires, because we want to read the data as well. And we also do not use the shift registers for the control wires, because we want to time the control pulses indepedently from the address line changes.

The idea is to write firmware that implements a command interpreter. This command interpreter allows us to enter commands (over UART/USB) to write bytes to memory locations. Here are examples of such commands.

The command interpreter will also support commands to read memory locations, so that we can verify writes.

I added LEDs to the schematics to get direct feedback on the commands. I liked that so much that in the end I put LEDs on all data and address lines. Then I decided to add two buttons to allow the user (with the help of the Nano) to go to next or previous address. The buttons form an alternative user interface, but only allows reading.

3.1.2. Hardware of the EEPROM programmer

This is the schematic of my Arduino EEPROM Programmer:

I used 10k for the pull-ups and pull-downs. I used the quite large value of 1k for the current limiting resistors of the LEDs. V_R = 5-2 = 3V, so that I_R = 3/1000 = 3mA. If all 11+8 LEDs are on, they consume only 60mA. Recall, the board is running from USB.

3.1.3. Firmware of the EEPROM programmer

The Nano in the Arduino EEPROM Programmer needs a sketch. I ended up with nearly a "product quality" sketch. If you want less, copy only the "EEPROM" section.

You can connect to the Nano via a terminal program (UART over USB), and give the Nano commands to write or read EEPROM locations. See below for a demo session.

The >> is the prompt. After the prompt I typed commands. The next line(s) are the response.

Instead of entering commands manually over the UART/USB, one can also use a terminal program to send a file with write commands. Such a file could be called an EEPROM programming script.

Keep in mind that the Nano is less fast then your PC. So the PC will send the characters in the file so fast to the Nano that it can't keep up. You should typically configure the terminal to have a per character or per line delay when sending files. I use a "line delay" of 25ms.

Some example scripts are given. Two, inx-loop and stx-inx-loop, uses series of write commands. Two others, main33inc-isr44inc and blinky are more elaborated. They use streaming mode, echo commands to keep track of progress, comments with #, and verifies at the end of the script if writing was successful.

The third program is the same program that we used in the previous chapter. We will now use it again. The fourth (blinky) will be used at the end of the chapter.

3.2. 6502 with EEPROM and Nano

In this section, we are going to load an EEPROM with a program, hook the EEPROM to the 6502 and let it run. To confirm correctness, we trace it with a Nano. The Nano thus also acts as clock.

For the 6502, we use the third program. The main loop increments zero pages address 33 and the ISR routine (when an interrupt occurs) increments zero page address 44.

Once the EEPROM is programmed, we connect it to an 6502. The Nano will run the address and data tracer from the previous chapter.

We have wired the EEPROM to be always in output mode (nCE and nOE are connected to GND). The Nano firmware ensures that data pins are always in input mode. That is safe. But the 6502 data pins could be in output as well (when the 6502 pushes or stores). Therefore, I have added resistors between the EEPROM and the 6502.

Note that we also tried IRQ, but since there is no RAM yet, this crashes (when popping the return address using RTI).

3.3. 6502 with EEPROM and oscillator

Would the EEPROM also work on full speed; 1MHz from a oscillator. The problem is how to verify that. My idea is to trace 4 address lines, the reset and the clock on an oscilloscope or logic analyser. This is going to be painfull, so let's first switch to a simple program.

3.4. Blinky

The previous section was a major milestone: a 6502 clocked by an oscillator and running a program from EEPROM. Nearly a complete computer, except for the RAM. But we also miss peripherals like GPIO or UART. Maybe at some stage my project will have those, but not now. So how can we make the "Hello, world!" of embedded software, a blinky?

The trick that I cooked up was having two wait loops. One wait loop running in address range A, the other wait loop running in address range B. Range A will have the form like aaaaaaaaaaaaxxxx, where the a's are stable bits and the x's vary. Similarly, range B will have the form like bbbbbbbbbbbbxxxx, where the b's are stable bits and the x's vary. And then, since the loops are at two different locations, aaaaaaaaaaaa and bbbbbbbbbbbb are different. So there is some position where the a differs from the b. Too abstract?

Look at these two routines sub1 and sub2. They are the same, except that at the end, 1 jumps to 2 and 2 jumps to 1.

What does each sub do? On high level, it waits Y loops. Y is one of the 6502 registers, and it is the input parameter for the sub. It is also the output parameter of the sub, because the sub decreases it by 1 (see the DEY on 020C). Note that Y is decremented every sub call, so it will reach zero and wrap around. And this happens continuously, so I didn't care about a start value of Y.

But again, both subs wait Y.

How do they do that? They transfer Y to X (via A because there is no instruction to move Y to X). That is the TYA and TAX on 0200 and 0201. Next come two nested loops. The outer loop does a DEX (0209) and BNE LOOP (020A). So indeed, X counts from Y to 0.

To waste some "serious" time, there is an inner loop. The A is loaded with 50 (some arbitrary number). In the inner loop we add a carry to A (the set-carry SEC and add-with-carry ADC #00) until A wraps around and is 0.

So, sub1 delays Y, then jumps to sub2, sub2 delays Y then jumps to sub1. Both subs decrement Y so the alternation between the two subs is faster and faster.

How does this make a blinky? Let's look at the address patterns.

The complete sketch is available as script for my Arduino EEPROM Programmer. Once the EEPROM is programmed, plug it in the breadboard of the previous section.

And enjoy the blinking.

3.5. EEPROM programmer V2

After doing chapter 4 (RAM) and 5 (decoder) I received a new package with 74595 ICs. I decided to upgrade my EEPROM programmer.

3.5.1. The new 74595 shift register

This is the internals of the 74164: a cascade of flip-flops with output buffers.

The 74595's are similar to the 74164's, but they have two extra features: an extra layer of latches, and a 3-state output.

The first feature means that the shift registers are isolated from the output: first the Nano shifts the bits in the shift flip-flops (using the DS line for the data bits and SHCP line for the shift clock pulse). Next the Nano copies the shift flip-flops with one pulse on the STCP ("store clock pulse") in the latches.

This feature helps us a little bit: I have LEDs on the address lines, and they flicker during shifting.

The other feature is the output stage. The 74164 has a buffer ("amplifier") that puts the output signal on the Q lines. This is known as 2-state output (namely low or high). The 74595 can disable the buffer via the nOE line, making the Q-line high-impedance (the third state). This would allow the outputs of two shift registers to be tied together as long as at most one is enabled. We do not use this feature in the EEPROM programmer.

3.5.2. New board schematics

The schematics of the new EEPROM programmer shows only a couple of minor improvements

  • The 74595's replace the 74164's, so that there is no LED flicker during shifting
  • The current limiting resistors for the (address and data) LEDs are increased from 1k to 10k (the LEDs were too bright)
  • The current limiting resistors for the (address and data) LEDs are replaced by a resistor array to save space
  • The two switches now have a 100nF capacitor parallel to the switch to mitigate debounce effects
  • I removed the two pull-ups for nOE and nWE - I believe the Nano ports have stronger internal pull-ups anyhow

3.5.3. Software improvements

The software improvements are also small

  • Includes support for 74HC595 (but the 74164 still works).
  • The UART (over USB) is checked for overflows (when the PC sends data too fast) which could cause missing bytes to write
  • Arduino EEPROM Programmer now polls the EEPROM for write to complete, instead of having a "long" time-out.
  • The verify command now prints the write/programming time.
  • The verify command now prints the number of UART overflows (if the PC sends "write"s too fast).
  • Added power-on LED animation, so that the user can see when the Nano is booted.

The third point was surprisingly hard. This is what the datasheet specifies:

The AT28C16 provides DATA POLLING to signal the completion of a write cycle. During a write cycle, an attempted read of the data being written results in the complement of that data for I/O7 (the other outputs are indeterminate). When the write cycle is finished, true data appears on all outputs.

I have five AT28C16 chips, ordered in one batch. On closer examination; they appear to be different: the print on the back side differs. This is what I found for the data polling

  • One chip behaves accoring to datasheet. For approximately 5ms of polling (continuously reading all 8 data lines) the value read is "indeterminate" but the MSB is inverted with what was written. After the 5ms the values read are what is written.
  • Two chips are so "fast" (0.350ms) that the first poll is already the value written.
  • Two chips return always 0x00 when polling and after about 5ms return the written value. So there is no inverted MSB. This is a problem when we write 0x00, we cannot see when the internal write process finishes. So when writing 00, I revert to the old approach of simply waiting 10ms.

3.6. EEPROM programmer V3

I started the V3 programmer, because I wanted to add support for a bigger EEPROM. Instead of the 2k chips (AT28C16), I received 8k EEPROMs AT28C64. I ordered a set of five. However, out of these five, I cannot write a single one ... grrr. Is this broken hardware again? On my inquiry I got a one-line response "Tested goods have no problem".

I did order new 8k EEPROMs, and they do work on my programmer...

Adding support for the bigger EEPROM is relatively easy: they have a large overlap in pinout. The figure below shows the two compared.

Note that we have problems for two pins: NC/VIN and A11/nWE. If we can believe the datasheet, the NC is really not connected, so wiring VIN should not be a problem. For the A11/nWE we need a simple mux - we can make one with a single quad-NAND, see the schematic in the lower right of the diagram above.

Software improvements made for V3

  • Added support for AT28C64
  • Removed the fast writes (polling) and reverted to time-out because it was not stable
  • Added support for chip-enable
  • Added 'select' button to speed up address stepping
  • Buttons can no also select EEPROM type and enable

3A. Appendix

3A.1. PCB

After completing the feasibility on the breadboard, I decided to make a real PCB. I used easyeda to draw the schematic. Next step is to design the layout for the PCB.
