Group BB1 Project Proposal: Dating Web Application

Problem/Data Domain

It's no secret that the dating scene in college can be quite large. Some students have it easier,
while others may experience a more difficult time navigating the dating life in hopes of finding "the one".
As undergraduate students at the University of Washington, we know how challenging it can be for young students in the dating realm,
especially because of the different number of dating apps out there, such as Tinder, Hinge,
Bumble, Match, and so on. All of these
different options can cause students to feel overwhelmed and not know where to start. Students also don't want to deal
with the natural consequences that come along with dating, like getting ghosted, being left on read, having someone turn out to be
completely opposite of what you expected, and many more. With all these considerations in mind, our team would like to create
an online dating web application for University of Washington students.

There are a number of information technology problems in this space. One obvious one is that there are
just too many dating app options. The amount of possibilities causes people to feel overwhelmed, especially those who are new to online dating,
and unsure of which option actually works. There's also a lot of them that have already fallen off the grid, so it's better to have
just a few options that work well. Scams and the spread of misinformation online is a common issue as well, making it easy for
a person to pose as someone completely different. Tinder is a popular existing dating app that has tried to help people date successfully,
but the Tinder bubble can be too big for UW students who just want to meet other UW students. Another big issue with apps like Tinder is that
they can be extremely surface-level. Just by seeing what a person looks like on the outside, a person is able to reject that person with one swipe.
These are just a few key problems that are worth solving.

App Description

This web application will be restricted to UW students as our goal is to create a more comfortable platform where users are within the UW community. All students are welcome to use the app as long as they sign in with their UW email. Therefore, the entire student population including minority groups is able to use the app. This not only ensures authentication for each account but also creates a more protected environment tailored for UW students.

There are several main features designed for this application:

Personal profile creation

Users (restricted to UW students) can upload their profile with information including their name, pronouns, age, interests, the type of person they are looking for, etc., and publish it to the website so that everyone on the platform can see it.

Profile customization

Users can edit and rearrange their public profile if they want to. For instance, they can change their profile avatar and background image; they can also choose to not display their age on their profile or to include their contact information.

Search and filter

Users can search for other users by account names, or by using the filter according to their preferences to find people of similar interests. This way, they don't have to go through the entire list of users for hours trying to find a person they might be interested in.

Connecting to other users

If a person found another person interesting and wants to contact them, the first person can send out a connection request. Once two users are connected, they will have each other's contact saved in their list of connections so that they can find each other easier and quicker every time they open the app.

The data and information of our app relies on UW students creating a community on the app. Users must register and upload their profile to the app, sending it to our database of users. This database of UW students is the foundation that our app is built upon. Users will be seeing the profiles of other users on the app, filtered by their preferences.
The profiles contain only the information that is provided by the users, a user can choose to not upload a picture or something like pronouns but they will not appear in a search regaurding those entrys.
In creating the user profile, users may be asked questions such as:

Gender

Major

Interests

Graduation Year

These will be in multiple choice form which allows for ease of searching and profile recommendations.
Aisde from the multiple choice entrys, users have the options to include a bio which would be seen by other users as well.

Through the features of our app, we hope to solve the problems we found with the current apps in the domain space. With so many options, since our target userbase are students at UW, this app will be the primary choice for dating within the UW community. Our UW authentication feature keeps our community private and safe space for UW students to meet each other.
