Errors on install #259

I managed to hose my Homebridge installation (running on Hub Pro), so I started over. However, insteonlocal wont install. When I try to install through the command line, I get

@Calorion As the error states, node v10.24.0 isn't supported - you'll need to update to a more recent version of node.

@Calorion From the first post, it looks like you may have multiple nodes versions installed. Recommend using node version manager: https://github.com/nvm-sh/nvm

It looked like Homebridge has its own version, apart from the one in Debian. I managed to upgrade the Debian one, but when I installed Insteonlocal via the command line, it didn’t show up in Homebridge UI.

I’ll give it a try, but I don’t think this is the problem here.

I installed NVM, but I'm still getting the serial errors preventing Homebridge from running.

@Calorion It is still trying to use the Debian apt version of node. I would recommend you uninstall that version and make sure that you add the correct lines to your .bashc (or whatever shell) as stated on the nvm repo.

Any clues? I'm perfectly willing to start fresh with a new image, but I've either got to fix this or tear my fan apart again.

@Calorion If you've installed serial port globally and its not finding it then its likely something in your environment (path, etc) that is missing. Perhaps an easier solution is to cd into the directory where you have the plugin installed, then its node_modules directory, and finally the home-controller/node_modules directory and install serialport there using npm i serialport (without the -g).

Running sudo npm i serialport results in sudo: npm: command not found

After installing serialport into /var/lib/homebridge/node_modules/homebridge-platform-insteonlocal/node_modules/home-controller/node_modules and restarting Homebridge…it is still giving me

I'm running Homebridge on a Hub Pro if I haven't mentioned that before.

Also, by the way, installing the plugin from the command line using npm -g install homebridge-platform-insteonlocal doesn't make it show up in Homebridge UI. I have to install it using the Homebridge UI for that to work.

Could it be that the Port is wrong? I can no longer access any info from the Insteon+ app, so I don't know the port, username or password.

Aha! I fixed it! I uninstalled and reinstalled Insteonlocal, then installed serialport locally (possibly installing serialport globally through the Homebridge terminal was required).

Now I'm not getting the serial error anymore! Instead, I'm getting Error: Error: Permission denied, cannot open /dev/ttyS4.

Fixed that too! The "homebridge" user had to be added to the "dialout" group.
