How can I make "f" and "j" be tap-hold-press ... and only after some idle time, e.g. 50ms

I want a responsive shift experience which isn't really possible if I use tap-hold-release ... and to avoid accidental shifting I need this idling. Not sure if this is possible with virtual keys and on-idle, I tried but somehow I couldn't get it to work. Is this actually possible?

Ok, I found this: #502 (comment) and some more ideas in that same thread, are the more implementations of that idea or which one do you guys use for your home row shift?

Just to add (and admit), my solution isn't perfect since now deliberate capitalization is kind of slow, you need to just type slower then, and as mentioned so not really responsive. So, at one point I would need to switch to your to your solution haha.

Just thinking loud: Would it be a good idea to disable entire Kanata when idle goes under a given idle time, also having just one general setting for this. But not sure if (1) this is really a good idea from an UX view and how much it would affect other stuff and (2) technically feasible. /cc @jtroo

Apologies for spamming the thread, now I get all these ideas: Another option would be something like tap-hold-press-except and the 5th param would be all keys where you won't have a press but a normal tap-hold behavior, so even not tap-hold-release

Depends exactly what "disable entire Kanata" means. Some options:

• have on-idle switch to some very basic layer with some mechanism of reactivating more advanced functionality
• have on-idle switch to a new configuration file via lrld-next with a minimal config to allow lrld-next/prev back to the original layer.

You can try adding it yourself, or adjust/replace the code of the existing except-keys/release-keys, just to try it out. The PR adding except-keys should be a good starting point: https://github.com/jtroo/kanata/pull/656/files
