Currently we are not supporting the virtual hosting addressing style. See:

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/VirtualHosting.html

If I enable virtual hosting in the aws s3 api client, I get an error about not being able to reach the host due to the bucket name being in the host:

Could not connect to the endpoint URL: "http://alice-bucket.irods-s3-api:8080/?uploads"

We haven't decided whether or not we want to support this.
