The sim cards registered via the webui are working ok, but the same sims, provisioned with pyhss are unknown to open5gs. is there any setting in .env required to change the hss location?

I didnt quite get what you mean by "provisioned with pyhss are unknown to open5gs". can you please elaborate?? you mean replacing open5gs HSS with pyHSS for both S6a and Cx??
