Distributions come in one of two release types
- Point release
- AKA dot release
- Most distrubtions use point release
- Releases are generally on a cadence of 6 to 24 months
- Packages are held at specific versions for testing
- Point release distributions are generally more stable than rolling release
- Examples: Ubuntu, Debian stable, Fedora, etc.
- Rolling release
- AKA rolling update
- AKA continuous delivery
- Packages are updated continuously
- Rolling relese distributinos are generally more up-to-date with package versions
- Examples: Arch, Debian "Sid" unstable, Debian testing, Manjaro
