An outstanding item identified by @theurich (January 17, 2024) towards allowing C-based NUOPC components:

Extensions will probably be needed in the ESMC_Field, ESMC_Grid and ESMC_Mesh APIs. Gerhard hasn't identified specific things, but expects there will be some things that need to be extended. This would probably be done on an as-needed basis.

This issue is a place-holder to remind ourselves of this need, despite there not being a specific, identified change associated with this issue.
