Problem with aeronet lat/lon locations #1888

Hi,
I have opened a ticket few days ago with question related to ascii to nc and using pointstat. Reviewing the conversations of that ticket, I have found one question still remained unanswered or I need more information on that. Question is, if I have 100s of input ascii individual data files in an input data directory, can one Metplus ascii to nc conf will be able to convert all of them into 100 separate nc files ? Or I have to run for each input station ascii files. I put some example data points in Hera at (all *.lev15)
/scratch1/NCEPDEV/stmp2/Partha.Bhattacharjee/METplus/Scripts/Aeronet

Any help on this is appreciated.

Hi Julie, The impact of this bug is that we can't run the GEFS-aerosol component of EVS on WCOSS2. We met with Jason this morning, and yes, we will need a bugfix release (MET-11.0.2) installed on WCOSS2. How long do you think it would take to 1) cut a bugfix release and 2) send us the necessary responses to the WCOSS2 installation Google Form? Take care, Alicia

Hi @perthsb. It sounds like you are wondering if a single METplus configuration file for ASCII2NC can convert multiple files from ascii to nc. The answer is yes it can. Please take a look at this ASCII2NC: Basic Use Case in our documentation, which help guide you through how to do that. You'll want to make use of the ASCII2NC_INPUT_TEMPLATE for your input data files. I hope that helps!

Thanks @jprestop . I have checked 550nm file on output of individual site file and looks ok. Question is :

How to use that "550nm" field in pointstat to verify model forecast , in terms of obs_index and obs_val in configure file to point the right field ?
Also, asciitonc does not work on "all sites" which will produce netcdf of all stations ? Any guess whether that will be added in METplus capability ?

Partha, the short answer is that you'd use:
name = "AOD"; level = "Z550";
In the obs dictionary to match observations of type AOD with a "height" value of 550.

I wanted to go a step further and actually run METplus on Hera to demonstrate but I'm not totally sure what you're running. I went hunting around in /scratch1/NCEPDEV/stmp2/Partha.Bhattacharjee/METplus/Scripts and copied files over into my working area. But when I run:

bash /home/John.H.Gotway/MET_Help/discussion_1888/run_metplus_PointstatAeronet.sh

It errors out with:

12/14 21:28:43Z run-METplus-metplus: ERROR:  Cannot set FCST_VAR1_LEVELS or OBS_VAR1_LEVELS if BOTH_VAR1_LEVELS is set.

If the info above is enough to make progress, great. If not, and you'd like me to debug further, please take a look in:

/home/John.H.Gotway/MET_Help/discussion_1888/conf

And tell me which METplus conf files I should be using instead.

@JohnHalleyGotway sorry for late reply. I have found the script is pointing somewhere else in data directory. I have modified it and here is the location : /scratch1/NCEPDEV/stmp2/Partha.Bhattacharjee/METplus/Scripts/Scripts/run_metplus_PointstatAeronet.sh
So, In the first step, asciitonc converted station data to a netcdf file and interpolated AOD to 550nm. So netcdf file contains data according to observation time for that day. Now in this step, trying to validate model forecast data (which is at 3hr interval) against those obs and using a window of +/- 1 hours (so forecast of 12 hour will use any observations that are between 11 to 13 to validate model forecast). I hope I made it clear.

@perthsb OK, I was able to get copy over your setup and get an example running.

In the METplus log file, I found a Point-Stat command that produced 0 matched pairs:

DEBUG 2: Processing AOTK/A0 versus AOD/Z550, for observation type AERONET_AOD, over region FULL, for interpolation method NEAREST(4), using 0 matched pairs.
DEBUG 2: Number of matched pairs   = 0
DEBUG 2: Observations processed    = 4816
DEBUG 2: Rejected: station id      = 0
DEBUG 2: Rejected: obs var name    = 2666
DEBUG 2: Rejected: valid time      = 2150

So obs are being rejected because of their valid time.
Here's the forecast and observation files being compared:
FCST: /scratch1/NCEPDEV/stmp2/Partha.Bhattacharjee/METplus/Prod/20221209/00/gefs.chem.t00z.a2d_0p25.f000.grib2
OBS: /scratch1/NCEPDEV/stmp2/Partha.Bhattacharjee/METplus/Scripts/Aeronet/Aeronet_Download/asciitonc/GSFC_2022120900.nc

Running wgrib2 I see that the forecast data is valid at 2022120900.
Running ncdump -v hdr_vld_table I see that valid time of the point observations range from 20221209_131031 to 20221209_204711.

So they just do NOT overlap in time, and that's why you're getting 0 matched pairs.

I modified the configuration to make the matching time window huge!

OBS_POINT_STAT_WINDOW_BEGIN = -3600000
OBS_POINT_STAT_WINDOW_END = 3600000

And re-running DOES produce matched pairs:

DEBUG 2: Processing AOTK/A0 versus AOD/Z550, for observation type AERONET_AOD, over region FULL, for interpolation method NEAREST(4), using 86 matched pairs.

But that's obviously not how we want to do it. Instead, we want to verify against point observations that are close in time to the model verification time.

But you'll need to figure those details out. Do you actually have AOD obs for 00Z or do they only occur between 13Z and 21Z?

If the station_id is the same, two or more AERONET V3 inputs can be concatenated. Otherwise the input is not accepted by ascii2nc because of the sanity checking by AERONET Site Name (which becomes the station_id for MET tools).

Individual input file GSFC_20221202.lev15.txt is not processed by ascii2nc as is. Two changes at the input file are required to be processed by ascii2nc:

The line 2 should be added with "AERONET Site Name"
The "AERONET_Site" column should be moved to after 2nd column because the first and second columns are reserved as "Date(dd:mm:yyyy)" and "Time(hh:mm:ss)" columns.

The combined input file 20221202.lev15.txt:

The sanity checking with AERONET Site Name should be disabled to support combined input with different AERONET Site Names.

As a test, when I print out "hdr_lat" and "hdr_lon" from generated netcdf file, it shows value of 32.233 and -110.953 in all 8948 columns, which is the lat and lon of first station. In the input file, latitude and longitude changes for each stations in that column.

ascii2nc converts "N/A" as the missing value (-9999.0) on handling aeronet. The input file contains -999.0 instead of N/A. It causes NaN after computing 550nm AOD.

Thanks @hsoh-u . But that is not an issue for single site input data (GSFC_20221209.lev15), where METplus worked and generated 550nm AOD in netcdf. That file also contains -999.0 in data columns like the file 20221209.lev15 (for all stations).

@perthsb it looks to me like this issue has been fixed in the main_v11.0 branch, which means it'll be fixed in the MET version 11.0.1 bugfix release. Let me describe the testing I did on this branch.

Pull the 2 sample files:

8842

So we have about the same number of AOD/550 results as the number of headers.

Am I correct in concluding that this issue is fixed for MET version 11.0.1, likely by dtcenter/MET#2383?

Partha, I just tested on my laptop. But its not the python version that's causing the difference, it's the MET version.

You're testing the MET-11.0.0 released version (in /contrib/met/11.0.0). I am testing the latest version from the main_v11.0 branch of the MET GitHub repository. It's the recently committed changes to the main_v11.0 branch that FIX this problem.

I was able to get on Hera just now and run Partha's runasciitonc_aerov3.sh script from /scratch1/NCEPDEV/stmp2/Partha.Bhattacharjee/METplus/JohnHG at /scratch1/BMC/dtc/Julie.Prestopnik/met_help/perthsb_1888 and was able to reproduce the results:

Modifying the script (runasciitonc_aerov3_rc1.sh) to run MET 11.0.1-rc1, I saw that the code no longer produces an error.

Hi,
I want to report an issue related to asciitonc while using for Aeronet data using the latest bugfix version. As asciitonc runs and creates netcdf file, I found that latitude and Longitude of station data is not changing, although the station name and AOD values change.
On Cactus I have run this one : /lfs/h2/emc/vpppg/noscrub/Partha.Bhattacharjee/Aerosol/METPlus/Aeronet_download/run_Aeronet_ascii2nc.sh and when I looking into dump file generated at the same directory from netcdf files, I found this issue. It is creating an issue when I am doing Pointstat.
Any help is appreciated.

They were fixed already at 11.0 bugfix release.

NaN value is replaced with the missing value at ascii2nc on computing AOD values with AERONET input
print_pointnc2ascii.py handles the NaN value at the MET observation NetCDF file. Display NaN value as "NA"

print_pointnc2ascii.py is a standalone utility. It can be used after downloading from the github repository without building or installing steps. print_pointnc2ascii.py is available at print_pointnc2ascii.py for 11.0 bugfix and latest print_pointnc2ascii.py for 11.1 beta

Thanks, @hsoh-u. @perthsb mentioned that with the bugfix release as asciitonc runs and creates netcdf file that the latitude and longitude of the station data is not changing, although the station name and AOD values change. He said there is an issue when he's running PointStat. I don't know exactly what he's running because I can't get to his script, run_Aeronet_ascii2nc.sh, on Cactus yet, but he seems to think that the latitude and longitude values are not correct.

@jprestop and @hsoh-u thanks. I am sharing the location of file on Hera. Script to run is
/scratch1/NCEPDEV/stmp2/Partha.Bhattacharjee/METplus/From_Cactus/Aeronet/runasciitonc_hera.sh
and it creates All_20230326.lev15.dump.txt in the same directory using print_pointnc2ascii.py utility. Once you open that text file, go to line 6104, where first instance of station ID changes and you will see lat and lon of the first station is retained even when the station is changed. Like this :

That lat and lon is retained in the entire length and it never changes and that creates an issue with Point Stat as it reads only one station data. Hope this explains it now. Any help is appreciated.

@AliciaBentley-NOAA Thank you for letting us know.

@hsoh-u, with regard to Alicia's question about when we can cut a bugfix release, when would you be able to work on this issue for a MET-11.0.2 bugfix release?

Alicia, I can start working on updating the instructions and the responses to the Google form now, but will have to update some last minute details (like for example, copying the Release Notes to a google doc, etc.) after the actual release.

Marking this as being answered since this issue was fixed via dtcenter/MET#2493 and included in the MET 11.0.2 release.
