highlight for soft-wrapped lines

When a line is soft-wrapped, the part that extends onto the "virtual line" doesn't get highlighted.

I suspect this is not possible: the fringe beside the wrapped lines either shows the "continuation" indicator, or none. There seems to be no way to change this indicator per-line.

But if someone has a technical proposal, welcome.
