Apparently we need to add <release>8</release> to the the maven-compiler-plugin configuration in the pom.xml to make sure JDK9 (which is used for building) "links" against the correct classes.

Otherwise we get errors like java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: Method flip()Ljava/nio/ByteBuffer; does not exist in class java.nio.ByteBuffer.

A first test showed, that it can indeed be fixed by compiling with --release 8. To be confirmed, e.g. by @markuskreusch.
