A number of different groups within CIOOS needs to have their datasets bilingual. In order to achieve this a few methods were used:
Add both languages with a separator to each associated field: see creator_name, title in SLGO dataset
Add an extension (_fr|_en) to the alternative language. This based on the primary languagge given within the CIOOS metadata form. This primary language will be associated to the main fields (title,summary,...), the alternative language is associated to the same fields to which a suffix(_fr|_en) was added. This present repo uses the following implementation.
Associate one language to the main keys and the other to the other language regardless of the primary language associated to this metadata record.
As far as I know no metadata profiles are doing any multilingual recommendations so far. ERDDAP and other data systems will only consider the primary keys. It would be good to ask the community if any standards were already actively in use or plan.
