Currently it is not possible to override templates of external apps, leave it as a special case or add one of those two solutions.

Add global template directories definition:

TEMPLATE_DIRS = (
    os.path.join(BASE_DIR, '{{ project_name }}/common/templates'),
)

Or move common app before external apps:

# Application definition
 INTERNAL_APPS = (
-    '{{ project_name }}.common',
 )
