Introduce local benchmarks using something like criterion.

Define what we want to benchmark.

Examples:

using a dummy HTTP client to respond with object payloads as fast as possible to remove network overhead for downloads
using an in-memory object with a dummy HTTP client that accepts payloads as fast as possible to test uploads
fine grained benchmarks on internal components
